Recipes of Youngstown donates $15,000 for
YSU veterans scholarship

Through the Youngstown community’s support and beyond, the Recipes of Youngstown presented the YSU Foundation with a $15,000 donation.

The funds will go toward the Recipes of Youngstown Veterans Scholarship at Youngstown State University. Established in 2017 by Recipes of Youngstown members and the Youngstown Historical Society, the endowment supports YSU’s Armed Forces Student Association members.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are at least sophomore standing or higher. They can be from any branch of the US Armed Forces, and eligibility includes honorably discharged military service veterans or those who received a general discharge resulting from an injury or illness.

Jeanne Hamey Morris, Recipes of Youngstown head administrator, said, “None of us would have what we do today without the sacrifice, dedication, and courage of our veterans. We wanted to honor and thank them in a tangible way while continuing our commitment to Youngstown.”

Recipes of Youngstown began as a Facebook group started by Bobbi Ennett Allen in 2013. While living in California at the time, Bobbi wanted to prepare hometown recipes. A year later, hundreds of recipes were shared, and the first cookbook was published with proceeds benefiting Lanterman’s Mill.

There are now three Recipes of Youngstown cookbooks, which can soon be purchased in time for the holidays at the Youngstown Clothing Company store in the Southern Park Mall or at its website.

“We have seen how these books connect with people,” said Hamey Morris. “Many people had parents and grandparents who didn’t write down their recipes, and they have found many of their childhood favorites in our books….and we keep going because of the great character of the people of Youngstown and the strong connection we have with our hometown.”
