The Alexander and Casimir Szmaj Memorial Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering was established by Alexander and Casimir’s children. Alexander and Casimir taught their children the value of education as a means to improving life and also as a means to help them reach their full potential. Casimir came to the United States in 1950 with little more than “the shirt on his back” and the determination to make a better life for himself. While working at the Youngstown steel mills, he put himself through college, eventually earning a mechanical engineering degree from Youngstown State University. This scholarship is awarded to a STEM students majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
